Columbus Crew Eyeing Up Miguel Borja In Recent News
Recent links suggest Miguel Borja could be on his way to joining the Black and Gold
Earlier today, Hernan Castillo reported that Colombian National and River Plate forward Miguel Borja is being eyed by the Columbus Crew, which would mark their first action in the transfer market this off-season.
Borja, currently 31, has played across multiple clubs spanning both his academy and professional career, with River Plate being his most successful stint, making 109 appearances and hitting the back of the net 53 times since his arrival in 2022. Borja also has 30 caps with the Colombian National Team, with 9 goals. 2024 has also been Borja’s most productive season in his entire career.
Borja has mostly played in a two-striker setup at River Plate, contradictory to how the Crew set up with Cucho at striker and often two attacking midfielders below to feed him and also press higher when Cucho needs to drop deep to facilitate. Should Borja sign on, I imagine he would play alongside either Rossi, Ramirez, or other options in those attacking midfield roles under Cucho.
It has also been reported that Andres Herrera, who is currently on loan to the Crew from River Plate and is good friends with Borja could be a key factor should he decide to sign with the club.
Borjas contract will expire in December 2025, and his departure could be imminent with an overhaul of the squad and a reduction in his release clause from $8 million to $4 million at the turn of the new year. Borja is also being courted by an unnamed Russian side.
